Organic drugs:

Inorganic drugs:
Created from chemicals in a lab.
Patent medicines:
Over-the-counter; no prescription.
Ethical drugs:
Prescription.
What is a prescription?
Written order to pharmacist for specific drug.
Who is legally allowed to authorize a prescription?
dentist/doctor.
What must a doctor have in order to write a prescription?
DEA #.
Systemic vs. local drugs:
Affects body systems vs. only affects applied site.
What happens in the body when you take a drug?
1) absorption 2) distribution 3) metabolism 4) excretion
Schedule I drug:
Limited medical use; high abuse potential; heroin (street drugs)
Schedule II drug:
Accepted medical use; less abuse potential; prescribed in writing; vicodin, oxycotin
Schedule III drug:
Accepted medical use; less abuse potential; can be refilled; tylenol with codeine
Schedule IV drug:
Accepted medical use; low abuse potential; can be refilled 5 times in 6 months without seeing a doctor; xanax, valium
Schedule V drug:
Medical use; low abuse potential; must have prescription and ID; cough syrup with 200 mg or more of codeine
Schedule VI drug:
marijuana; medical/recreational use
What are prophylactic antibiotics used for?
Prevent bacteria from building up and causing infection
Allergic reaction:
Trigger immune response
Drug interaction:
Multiple drugs in body crossing
Drug tolerance:
immunity to drug due to overuse.
Drug addiction:
Physical dependence on drug causing withdrawal without it.
