Ch 3 Water Flashcards
List and explain the four properties of water
Cohesive behavior, Ability to moderate temperature, Expansion upon freezing, Versatility as a solvent
hydrophobic
repels water
hydrophilic
likes water
water’s cohesive behavior
- water molecules are linked by multiple hydrogen bonds which are constantly changing, and these linkages make water more structured than most other liquids
- Water molecules will adhere to anything that is polar as well as itself
water’s Ability to moderate temperature
Water doesn’t gain or lose energy easily
water’s Expansion upon freezing
the hydrogen bonds keep the molecules ‘at arm’s length,’ far enough apart to make ice about 10% less dense than liquid water.
water’s versatility as a solvent
Oxygen has regions of partial negative charge (attracted to catons), and hydrogen has regions of partial positive charge (attracted to anions). Can create a hydration shell (sphere) around solutes (the substance that is being dissolved) and eventually dissolve all the ions
