CH 3: Toxic Effects of Drugs Flashcards
blood dyscrasia
bone marrow depression caused by drug fx on the rapidly multiplying cells of the bone marrow
dermatological rxns
adverse rxns involving the skin
drug allergy
- formation of antibodies to a drug or drug protein
- causes an immune response when the person is re-exposed to that drug
hypersensitivity
excessive responsiveness to either the primary or secondary fx of a drug
poisoning
overdose of a drug that causes damage to multiple body systems & has the potential for fatal rxns
stomatitis
inflammation of the mucous membranes related to drug fx
superinfections
infections caused organisms usually cnotrolled by the normal flora, which allow other bacteria to enter the body & cause infection
anaphylactic rxn
an antibody reacts w/ specific sites in the body to cause the release of chemicals (including histamine) that produce immediate rxns that can lead to respiratory distress
cytotoxic rxn
antibodies circulate in the blood & attack antigens (the drug) on cell sites, causing death of that cell
serum sickness rxn
antibodies circulate in the blood & cause damage to various tissues by depositing in blood vessels
delayed allergic rxn
occurs several hrs after exposure & involves antibodies that are bound to specific wbc’s
normal flora
bacteria living w/in or on the surface of the body that protects the body from invasion by other bacteria
