CH 3: The Ankle Flashcards
What are the functions of the ankle?
1) Absorption
2) Propulsion
3) Stability
These must be working in equilibrium.
What is the Talocrural Joint?
A hinge joint formed by the articulation of the Tibia, Fibula and the Talus.
Often referred to as the Mortis.
Allows for Dorsiflexion & Plantarflexion
Supported by the Deltoid ligaments on the medial side, and the Lateral ligaments on the lateral side.
What are the 3 ligaments that make of up LCL?
- Anterior talofibular ligament
- Calcaneofibular ligament
- Posterior Talofibular ligament
What is the name of the ligament that supports the medial side of the ankle?
Deltoid Ligament
What is the normal ROM for the ankle?
Dorsiflexion - 20 degrees
Plantarflexion - 30-50 degrees
Normal gait requires 10 degrees of dorsiflexion and 20 degrees of plantarflexion with full extension at the knee.
Characteristics of an Inversion ankle sprain
Classified as 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree based on damage.
Generally caused by excessive simultaneous inversion and plantarflexion.
MOI can involve running, jumping or landing and usually occurs during transitions between non-weight-bearing and weight-bearing.
