Ch 3 Slideshow (1-10) Flashcards
What are the two major parts of the nervous system?
Central Nervous System (CNS) and Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
What does the CNS consist of?
The brain and spinal cord
What does the PNS consist of?
All the nerves that deliver information from the periphery to the CNS
What are neurons?
Cells that carry information between the body and the nervous system
What are the two divisions of the Peripheral Nervous System?
Somatic nervous system and Autonomic nervous system
What does the somatic nervous system do?
Gathers sensory information and sends it to the CNS, and relays movement information from the CNS to muscles
What is the Autonomic Nervous System responsible for?
Regulation of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems
What does the sympathetic nervous system do?
Triggers the fight-or-flight reaction
What is the role of the parasympathetic nervous system?
Reverses the sympathetic effects, returning the body to a resting state
What are afferent neurons?
Neurons that carry signals from the PNS to the CNS
What are efferent neurons?
Neurons that carry signals from the CNS to the PNS, muscles, and glands
What is the function of interneurons?
They relay signals between neurons, particularly in reflex circuits
What are the types of neuroimaging techniques mentioned?
MRI, fMRI, CAT, PET, TMS, and DTI
What is the function of the hindbrain?
Regulates basic life functions, such as breathing and heart rate
What is the role of the medulla?
Controls heartbeat, breathing, sneezing, and coughing
