Ethics
The theory of morality.
Moral Principles
The standard of conduct required generally by society or specifically by an organization or group.
Conflict of Interest
A situation in which there is a conflict between a professional’s obligation to the public, the client, the employer, and him/herself.
Duties of Professionals
Owed to public, client, employer, profession, oneself
Paramount Duty of Engineers
protect the safety & welfare of members of the public.
Bribery
Corruption of Foreign Public Officials Act. Applies to conduct outside Canada. Breach punishable by prison & fines.
Code of Ethics
10 on back of engineering license. Requires professionals to act in honest, trustworthy, & fair way. Hold paramount the safety & welfare of the public, the protection of the environment & promote health & safety in the workplace. Maintaining technical competence within their area of practice
Duty to the Client
act with fairness, courtesy & good faith. Requires disclosure of conflict of interest. Maintain confidentiality, except when duty to public require disclosure
Duty to the Profession
members must report their own or another member’s misconduct. should not criticize the work of others
Duty to the employer
similar to duty of client, employee is agent of employer so owes loyalty.
