Ch 3 Flashcards
RELIABILITY
get same result if test multiple times?
-measure multiple times w/diff errors - errors will eventually cancel each other out
-diff types of reliability
internal consistency
-reliability within test items
-enough test items will cancel each other’s errors out and be more reliable
inter-rater reliability
-reliability between observers ratings
-the rater’s judgments must strongly correlate
test-retest reliability
-stability across time: test same ppl @ diff times and get same answer
VALIDITY
-u measuring what you’re tryna measure?
construct validity
-does the measure reflect the construct
-this is the main one
-are u measuring the correct construct
criterion validity aka predictive validity
-how well do the results from the assessment correlate with results from other assessments intended to measure the same thing
-most important support for construct validity
convergent validity
-do results from this assessment correlate w/other assessments that measure related things ex. dominance scores correlate with leadership scores
discriminant validity
-is the device measuring only what it is intended to and not some other third variable?
face validity
-does the assessment look like its measuring the right thing?
culture and validity
-do scores on test have same meaning across ppl of diff cultures?
-both by the construct and how test is interpreted
creating good assessment devices via one of 2 approaches
- rational/theoretical approach
- empirical approach a)criterion keying b) use data to find what traits even exist
rational/theoretical approach to creating assessment devices
-develop measurment by first developin theoretical basis that the aspect of personality is important and then create valid/reliable test for it
empirical approach to creating assessment devices
(data based)
relies on data rather than theory to decide what items go into a device
a) use data to find what traits exist
b) criterion keying: items chosen soely by memers of specific group tend to answer them diff ex. depressed vs not depressed ppl answer diff
