ch 28 collection and analysis of bone marrow Flashcards
What is an indication for bone marrow aspirate?
–unexplained nonregenerative anemia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, pancytopenia
–observation of atypical cells, unexplained immature cells or abnormal blood cell morphology on peripheral blood smear
What is the life span of platelets?
–7 to 10 days
What is the average life span of large animal RBCs?
–approximately 5 months
What is the disadvantage of bone marrow aspirate vs biopsy?
the architecture cannot be assessed with an aspirate
**it can be impossible to confirm whether a poor cellular sample is a result of a pathologic process or unsatisfactory sampling
Which type of bone marrow sample provides a better assesment of bone marrow cellularity & is a better confirmation of myelofibrosis?
bone marrow–core biopsy
what are sites for bone marrow aspirate in large animals?
sternum
ribs
iliac crest
Lack of iron stores on bone marrow biopsy are suggestive of?
iron deficiency
abundant iron stores on bone marrow biopsy are associated with
anemia of chronic inflammation
What is the best way to assess erythropoiesis in horses?
to examine bone marrow
atypical cell populations observed on bone marrow aspirate is indicative of what disorders?
-myeloproliferative disorder
-infiltrative neoplastic process
-inflammation
-antigenic stimulation
What are signs of bone marrow necrosis on bm biopsy?
degenerative cells
amorphous proteinaceous debris
bone marrow necrosis can occur by what processes?
-secondary to infarction, neoplasia or inflammation
