Ch. 28 Flashcards
What is a protist
A mostly unicellular eukaryote. Protists constitute a phylogenetic group, they are no longer a kingdom. They are the most structurally and functionally diverse group of all eukaryotes.
Eukaryotes
Membrane-enclosed organelles. Most are protists and most protists are unicellular.
Types of protists
Photoautotrophs (contains chloroplasts), heterotrophs (absorb organic molecules or ingest larger food particles), mixotrophs (combines photosynthesis and heterotrophic nutrition).
Amitochondriates
Lack mitochondria. Many have been reclassified due to discovery of their mitochondria.
Endosymbiosis
A relationship between two species in which one organism lives inside the cell or cells of another organism.
