What are the BENEFITS of BREASTFEEDING?
- breastmilk provides best nutrition for baby
- decreases risk for ovarian cancer, breast cancer, type 2 DM, htn
- enhances bonding and attachment
How long is it recommended to breastfeed for?
exclusive breastfeeding for first 6 months and continue for at least 12
What does it mean if a newborn has GALACTOSEMIA?
they cant process galactose ( a sugar in breastmilk)
What are some reasons it would be CONTRAINDICATED to breastfeed?
If the mother has
1) human Tcell lymphotropic virus
2) untreated brucellosis
3) active TB
4) active herpes simplex lesions on breast
5) HIV (in U.S. bc in other countries the benefits for breastfeeding outweighs risk for infant contracting HIV)
Are infants at HIGH risk for fluid imbalances?
yes they lose water through urination and respiration
-no need to give them water bc they get enough through breastmilk or formula
What vitamins does breastmilk have?
all vitamins newborns need EXCEPT vit. D
What does prolactin do?
it aids in secretion of milk
What does oxytocin do?
its responsible for the let down reflex (milk ejection)
What are some feeding cues?
- hand to mouth
- sucking motion
- rooting reflex
- mouthing
What are some problems associated w/ latch?
- not a good seal
- nipple pain
- bleeding
- cracking
When should a bottle of formula be discarded?
1 hr after being fed to an infant
How long does BREASTMILK last in ROOM TEMP?
4 HOURS
How long does BREASTMILK last in the FRIDGE?
4 days
How long does BREASTMILK las in the FREEZER?
6 MONTHS
How long does BREASTMILK last in DEEP FREEZE?
up to 1 YEAR
