What caused the energy crisis?
Syria tried to invade Israel, one of our allies. Then OPEC called an Oil Embargo. This caused our oil prices to go up from 35¢ to $1.00
What are the camp David accords?
President Jimmy carter managed to gain peace with Egypt and Israel, in 1978. Anwar Sadat was the president of Egypt, who was later assassinated,and Menachem Begin was the Prime Minister of Israel.
What are the two assassinations and when did they happen?
- April 4, 1968-Martin Luther King Jr. was shot on the balcony of a hotel in Memphis, Texas.
- June 6, 1968-Ronald F Kennedy, senator for NY was shot in Los Angeles. Following his death was called the “day of mourning”
What happened with the Soviet Union, Carter Doctrine, and Iran?
The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan and created a “puppet government”. This resulted in two different reaction in America: 1. 1980 Boycott on the Olympics and embargo of grain we gave Russia. 2. Carter Doctrine was mad at Russia and removed the Salt II Treaty.
Iran: the revolution causes the shah or Iran to flee in 1979. The shah of Iran was pro U.S.A and repressive towards his people. After the shah fled, Agatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, a extreme zealot called U.S. The Great Satan. The shah fled to U.S where he died in a hospital bed, and this angered the zealots because they wanted to execute them. The American Embassy was stormed and 53 Americans were taken hostage. These hostages were shown on T.V. blindfolded to toy with America. April 8 1980 there was a failed attempt via helicopter to save hostages, but the copter crashed. Carter was then seen as weak and ineffective.
