- Marble sculpture of David in the middle of throwing a stone at Goliath. Stronger emotion and more dynamic movement than previous versions of the David statue.
Bernini. Ecstasy of Saint Teresa.
1645-1652. Marble sculpture of Saint Teresa experiencing holy visions as an angel drives an arrow into her chest. The piece was meant to bring devotion back into the Catholic Church.
Caravaggio. Judith Slaying Holofernes.
1598-9. Biblical tale of a woman killing a tyrant to free her fellow Israelites. Blood is bright red. Judith kills from a distance with her mistress as a witness.
Gentileschi. Judith Slaying Holofernes.
1614-1620. More terrified expression on Holofernes’ face and more realistic blood. Shows mistress assisting Judith in the murder. Borrows Caravaggio’s tenebrism technique.
Gentileschi. La Pittura.
1638-9. Supposed self-portrait of Gentileschi as an Allegory to Painting. Artist focuses on unknown canvas. Mask pendant symbolizes imitation; chain symbolizes transfer of knowledge.
Sanchez Cotan. Still Life with Game Fowl.
1600-1603. Assorted produce and birds hanging above a window sill. Sharp contrast between light on objects and dark background.
Velazquez. Las Meninas.
- A portrait of Philip IV’s daughter and her servants, as well as Velazquez himself. Intended to promote both the artist and the medium in the eyes of the king. Unique spacing and scale based on significance of subjects. King and queen in the mirror.
