What are the four LOC’s?
Alert and conscious, drowsy but responsive, unconscious but reactive to painful stimuli, comatose
What is a hemorrhage?
Continuous abnormal blood flow
What is urticaria?
Hives
What is the most commonly used drug for anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction)?
Epinephrine
What is hyperglycemia?
An elevated blood glucose level
What are the symptoms of hypoglycemia>
Weakness, tremors, sweating, hunger, and eventually loss of consciousness
Type 1 Diabetes (insulin-dependent) usually effects whom?
A lean individual under age 25 who produces little or no insulin and may develop circulatory impairment of vision, the kidneys, or extremities.
Type 2 Diabetes (obese individuals) usually effects whom?
Obese individuals over the age of 40 with a marked family tendency. Usually respond to hypoglycemic medications and changes in diet/lifestyle
What is a cerebrovascular accident (CVA)
A stroke caused by lack of adequate blood circulation to the brain
What does the acronym FAST stand for
Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call 911
What is a transient ischemic attack (TIA)?
Temporary attacks
What is vertigo?
A sensation of dizziness. Patient will not feel lightheaded but will feel like the room is spinning.
What is anoxia?
A lack of O2 to the brain
What is epistaxis
Nosebleed
What is shock?
Failure of circulation in which BP is inadequate to support O2 perfusion of vital tissues
