Ch. 2 Vocab Flashcards
Articulatory Phonetics
The study of the production of speech sounds
Acoustic Phonetics
The study of the transmission and physical properties of speech sounds
Palatography
An experimental method that shows the contact between the tongue and roof of the mouth, both while still and while speaking
Consonants
Sounds that are produced with a constriction somewhere in the throat that impedes airflow
Running Speech/Continuous Speech
The usual form of spoken language, with all the words and phrases run together, without pauses in between them
Voicing
Vibration of the approximated vocal folds caused by air passing through them
Vowel Space
Range of possible vowel sounds of a language from the high front vowel to the high back vowel
Nasalized Vowel
Vowel produced while lowering the velum to allow air to pass through the nasal cavity
Glottalization
The production of a speech sound with creaky voice or with a simultaneous glottal stop
Suprasegmental Features
A phonetic characteristic of speech sounds, such as length, intonation, tone, or stress, that “rides on top of” segmental features
Pitch Accent
A change in fundamental frequency used to put prominence on a particular word in an utterance
Compression
Physical phenomenon resulting in a higher concentration of air molecules within a given space
Rarefaction
Physical phenomenon by which air molecules become less concentrated within a given space
Harmonics
The overtone of the fundamental frequency of the vocal tract
Dynamic palatography
Experimental method that tracks the contacts and contact patterns between the tongue and the hard palate over time
