Who were the first known peoples of North America?
The Anasazi (ancient ones) Settled around 1200 BCE. They split into smaller tribes around 1300 CE.
Which settlers lived in present-day Arizona?
The Hohokam’s. They arrived around 300 CE and stayed until 1300 CE.
Who were the Mound Builder tribes? What kind of structures did they make?
Adena, Hopewell, and Mississippian tribes. They built enormous earthen mounds as temples and burial markers, similar looking to Mesoamerican pyramids.
These tribes were alive around 1000 BCE but had vanished by 1700 CE when Europeans first arrived.
Northern Native American tribes and specific characteristics?
Inuits and Aleuts.
They had igloos, hunted and fished.
Northwestern Native American tribes and their characteristics?
Tlingit’s, Haida’s, and Chinook’s.
Built wooden houses and totem poles. Fish (salmon) was a major food source.
Western Native American tribes and their characteristics?
Yakama’s, Nez Perce’s, Ute’s and Shoshone’s
These tribes preferred small clans over large villages.

Navajo’s, Zuni’s, Hopi’s, Pueblo’s, Acoma’s, and Apache’s.
Built pueblo houses using adobe, and grew maize.

Blackfoot, Dakota, Sioux, Crow, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Pawnee, Apache, Comanche.
All hunted the abundant buffalo.
Some (Blackfoot and Apache) used tepees.
Some (Comanche and Dakota) made use of horses that had escaped from Spanish explorers.

Farmed and had permanent villages surrounding their fields.

Chippewa, Huron, Miami, Shawnee, Algonquin, Iroquois.
Built longhouses from wood. Known as hunters, farmers, and traders.
What is the Iroquois league? What purpose did the league serve?
The league is a binding of 5 tribes (eventually 6) in the 1500s that held as an alliance and treaty called the Great Law of Peace. The Tribes (COSMOT): Cayuga Onondaga Seneca Mohawk Oneida Tuscarora (joined in 1722)
