Ch 2 Kinematics# Flashcards
Define speed.
The rate of change of distance.
Define velocity.
The rate of change of displacement.
Formula of average speed
average speed = total distance / total time
v refers to both speed and velocity.
Formula of average velocity
average velocity = total displacement / total time
v refers to both speed and velocity.
Define acceleration.
The rate of change of velocity.
Formula of acceleration
What physical quantity does the gradient of a speed-time graph give?
acceleration
What physical quantity does the gradient of a distance-time graph give?
speed
What physical quanity does the area under a speed-time graph give?
distance moved by object
Area under the graph can be of different shapes.
You just need to use the correct formula for the different shapes.
What is the value of the acceleration due to free fall on Earth? (include units)
10 m/s2
This is also the value for g, acceleration due to gravity on Earth.
How is acceleration related to deceleration?
a = -d
e.g. if acceleration is -3 m/s^2,
then deceleration is 3 m/s^2.
Describe the motion of the object in this speed-time graph.
object is moving with constant acceleration
Describe the motion of the object in this speed-time graph.
object is moving with decreasing acceleration
Describe the motion of the object in this speed-time graph.
object is moving with increasing acceleration
Describe the motion of the object in this speed-time graph.
object is moving with constant deceleration
