Ch. 2 Cog. and Motor Development Flashcards
Four Domains
Affective
Cognitive
Motor
Physical
Motor
Refers to any form of human movement behavior.
Psychomotor
Movements initiated by an electrical impulse from higher brain centers (action potentials & synapses)
Jean Piaget
Swiss psychologist
Interested in the process of thinking
Established the clinical method of research
Piaget’s Theory
Four major stages of cognitive development
1) Sensorimotor
2) Preoperational
3) Concrete operational
4) Formal operational
Adaptation
Cognitive development occurs through this process.
Two facets of adaptation
1) Assimilation
2) Accommodation
Infancy - Sensorimotor Stage
Birth – 2 years
Intelligence develops as a result of movement actions and their consequences
Substages of Sensorimotor Stage
Exercise of reflexes
Birth to 1 month
Substages of Sensorimotor Stage
Primary circular reactions
1 to 4 months
Subst. of Sens. Stage
Secondary circular reactions
4 to 8 months
Subst. of Sens. Stage
Secondary schema
8 to 12 months
Substages of Sens. Stage
Tertiary schema
12 to 18 months
Subst. of Sens. Stage
Invention of new means through mental combinations
18 to 24 months
Major Dev. in Sensorimotor Stage
Increasing awareness between self and others
Recognition that objects continue to exist even though they are no longer in view (object permanence)
Preoperational St.
2-7 years
verbal communication begins to emerge
language development is the most important aspect of this stage
Concrete Operations Stage
7-11 years
1) Children begin thinking logically about concrete events
2) Enhanced ability to decenter attention from one variable in a problem solving situation
Formal Operational St.
12 years
1) Ability to consider ideas that are not based on observable objects or experiences
2) Abstract ideas are possible.
Post-formal operations St.
1) Answers become less absolute
2) Thrive on detecting inconsistencies in ideas
3) New questions are discovered
Adulthood - Intellectual Development
A lifestyle that involves movement can play an important role in combating intellectual decline.
