Ch. 2 & Ch. 3 Flashcards

1
Q

What is PZT?

A

Lead Zirconate Titanate is used as a piezoelectric material. When it is deformed, an electric charge is generated. Also if an electric field is applied to a piezoelectric material, deformation occurs in what is known as the inverse piezoelectric effect.

Q

What is PVDF?

A

PVDF combines high piezoelectric, pyroelectric, and ferroelectric properties with high mechanical strength, high thermal stability, and biocompatibility.

Q

What is Terfenol-D

A

Terbium (Tb), Iron (Fe), Dysprosium (Dy)
is often used in actuators or transducers, where the change in the magnetic field can generate some kind of motion or an electrical or mechanical response.

Q

What is FBG?

A

Fiber Bragg Grating
As a resonant structure, the FBG will act as a wavelength selective mirror. If light from a broadband source is injected in the optical fiber, only light within a very narrow spectral width centered at the Bragg wavelength will be back-reflected by the grating. The remaining light will continue through the optical fiber to the next Bragg grating without experiencing any loss.

Q

SMA’s for structural retrofit

A

Antiseismic technique and It consisted in the insertion of vertical prestressing steel tie bars in the internal corners of the structure, without drilling masonry, in order to increase the flexural resistance of the Bell-Tower

Q

Explain Piezoceramics for Active Vibration control

A

AKA electronic dampening. The deformation of the sensor transducer results in an electrical current that is conditioned by operations such as amplification and shifting of the phase of the signal.

Q

Explain the shape-memory release device on Clementine Spacecraft

A

To release Clementine’s solar arrays, a heater coil triggers a change in the collar’s shape. This “shape memory alloy” material elongates and exerts
over 5,000 pounds of force to break a restraining bolt and free the solar panels.

Q

Explain vibration control on fighter jet tails with smart materials

A

The buffeting vibration control system has accelerometers and strain gauges to determine vibration. This info is then provided to a computer which relays the info back to the actuators (Piezoceramics). The actuators then bein to dampen the vibration.
