Ch. 2- Anatomy Flashcards
3 ways of describing brain regions
anatomy/structure (hemispheres, lobes, sulci, gyri)
cytoarchitectonics (Brodmann’s areas)
function *these can overlap!
major brain systems
motor
vision
sound
motor execution
M1- primary motor cortex- signal to muscles
SMA- supplementary motor cortex- internally planned and generated movements
PMC- premotor cortex- externally cued movements
PPC- posterior parietal cortex- sensory guided movements, attention
visual input
input from retina travels to posterior of cortex via the thalamus
lateral geniculate nucleus- thalamic relay for vision
primary visual cortex = Brodmann area 17 (aka V1)
2 functionally distinct visual pathways: 1. ‘what’ pathway 2. ‘where’ pathway- spatial location of objects, spatiotemporal guidance
auditory input
auditory cortex located on dorsal surface of the lateral sulcus (Brodmann areas 41 & 42)
tonotopically organized
association cortex
non sensory & non motor areas that integrate information from primary regions & multiple senses
involved in planning & storage of information (memory)
arcuate fasciculus
a dominant white matter tract that connects auditory/language areas in frontal lobe (Broca’s area) with similar areas in temporal lobe (Werniche’s area)
