Whole numbers and their opposites
Opposites
Numbers that are the same distance from 0 on a number line but on opposite sides.
Absolute value
A numbers distance from 0 on a number line.
Multiplicative inverse/ reciprocal
2 rational numbers whose product equals 1
Axiom
Properties we accept as fact without needing proof
Closure Property of Addition/ Multiplication
a+b= a rational number ab= a rational number
Commutative Property of Addition/ Multiplication
a+b=b+a
ab=ba
Associative Property of Addition/ Multiplication
a+(b+c)=(a+b)+c
a(bc)=(ab)c
Identity Property of Addition/ Multiplication
a+0=a
a•1=a
Inverse Property of Addition/ Multiplication
a+(-a)=0
a•1/a=1
Distributive Property
a(b+c)=ab+ac
Reflexive Property of Equality
a=a
Symmetric Property of Equality
If a=b then b=a
Transitive Property of Equality
If a=b and b=c then a=c
