Use in conjunction w/ immune suppression, chemo, HIV, anti-coagulation or use of hormonal contraceptives
What is the difference between complementary and alternative medicine?
Complementary medicine refers to practices/products used together with conventional medicine; whereas alternative medicine refers to systems, practices, and products that are used as a substitute for conventional medicine
What is naturopathy?
A medical system that aims to support the body’s ability to heal itself though diet/lifestyle changes w/ therapies including use of herbal supps, massage, and joint manipulation
What is a nutraceutical?
Refers to nutrients or other active food ingredients delivered in a pharmaceutical dose form
Who approves homeopathic products?
All homeopathic products premarket approval process is controlled by the Homeopathic Pharmacopeia Convention of the US, which is comprised of scientists/clinicians trained in homeopathy
What are the types of claims that can be made on dietary supplement label?
Nutrient, structure-function, and health
What is phytotherapy?
Science of using plant-based medicines to prevent/treat illness
Why are CGMP in place?
To ensure process controls are in place at each step of the manufacturing process regardless of whether one company or multiple firms are involved to ensure product contains what is purports to contain
What is integrative medicine?
Practice that combines both conventional and CAM approaches for which there is evidence for safety and effectiveness
What is homeopathy?
• Homeopathy is a system of medicine which is based on the principle of similar or like cures like. This is based on reasoning that while high doses of pharmacologically active substances cause symptoms when administered to healthy people, those same substances when prepared in very dilute form may relieve similar symptoms in conditions resulting from different etiologies
Who is responsible for ensuring dietary supp advertising is truthful, not misleading and based on sound scientific evidence?

What is a functional food?
foods that “move beyond necessity to provide additional health benefits that may reduce disease risk and/or promote optimal health (conventional foods, modified foods, medical foods, infant foods, weight loss foods)
What is a medical food?
Defined as “food which is formulated to be consumed/administered enterally under the supervision of a physician and which is intended for the specific dietary management of a disease or condition for which distinctive nutrition requirements based on recognized scientific principles are established by medical evaluation”
