Ch 18 Vitals Flashcards
Vitals consist of
Temp
BP
Pulse
Respiration
Vitals indicate the function of some of the body’s homeostatic mechanisms
What’s pyrexia?
When does it occur?
Hyperthermia/fever when body exceeds 37.5c (100f)
Death can occur in certain body temperatures
Core temp <25c(77f) >45c(113f)
What is the consistent core body temp in humans?
B/w 36.5-37.5(97.6-99.6f)
Characteristics of the pulse
Rate #of pulsation x min
Rhythm -Regularity of pulse
Quality-Strength of pulse
Oral temp
- 6-99.6
36. 5-37.5 c
Axillary
- 6-98.8
35. 8-37c
Rectal temp
98.6-100.6
37-38.1c
Tympanic temp
- 2-100.2
36. 8-37.9
Scale of pulse quality
0-4
0: no pulse
1: thready weak pulse
2: pulse difficult to palpate
3: normal pulse
4: bounding hyperactive
Biot’s breathing pattern
Cyclic breathing pattern characterized by shallow breathing alternating with periods of apnea
Cheyenne stokes breathing pattern
Cyclic breathing characterized by periods of respiration of increased rate and depth alternating w periods of apnea
Kussmaul breathing pattern
Increased rate and depth of respiration (above 20bpm)
