Ch 17 Newborn transitioning Flashcards
Neonatal period
First 28 days of life
Thermoregulation
Process of maintaining the balance between heat loss and heat production in order to maintain the body‘s core internal temperature
Cold stress
A cascade of physiological events caused by the infants use of chemically mediated thermogenesis in an attempt to increase core temperature
Jaundice
Occurs when a baby has a high level of bilirubin in the blood
Meconium
First feces or stool of the newborn
Neurobehavioral response
Relating to the relationship between the action of the nervous system and behavior
Neutral thermal environment
Maintenance of the infants temperature with a stable metabolic state along with minimal oxygen and energy expenditure. The NAT is best achieved when infants can maintain a core temperature at rest between 36.5°C and 37.5°C
Periodic breathing
Clusters of breath separated by intervals of apnea or near apnea
Reflex
An action that is performed as a response to a stimulus and without conscious thought
Surfactant
Compounds that lower the surface tension between two liquids, between a gas and a liquid, or between a liquid and a solid
