Ch 17 and 18 - Positive and Negative Punishment Flashcards
What is a punishment?
A consequence immediately following a behavior that makes the behavior less likely to occur in the future
What is a positive punishment?
Applying or giving an aversive stimulus
What is a negative punishment?
Removing a reinforcer
What are the issues with positive punishment?
Currently - the least used behavior modification procedure
Over-used and sometimes misused or abused in the past
What are the two types of positive punishment?
application of aversive activities
application of aversive stimulation
What are 4 types of punishment by application of aversive activities?
overcorrection
contingent exercise
guided compliance
physical restraint
Describe overcorrection
The individual has to engage in effortful behavior contingent on the problem behavior
Describe contingent exercise
Contingent on the problem behavior, the individual engages in some effortful behavior for a specified period of time
Describe guided compliance
Contingent on problem behavior that occurs following a request, the individual is physically guided to comply with the request.
uses positive punishment and negative reinforcement
Describe physical restraint
Contingent on the problem behavior, the body part involved in the behavior is held immobile for a specified period of time
What are the two categories of negative punishers?
Time-outs
Response Cost
Describe response cost
A specified amount of a reinforcer is removed following the problem behavior, causing the behavior to decrease in the future.
What are common errors for implementing response cost protocols?
Repeatedly threaten to take something away, and/or not following through
Make reinforcer loss too delayed
Struggle with, scold or nag the individual while taking the reinforcer away
What is a common error in implementing response cost protocols with token economies?
Taking away more tokens than are being delivered
Describe time-out
The person is removed from all sources of reinforcement or from the reinforcing environment contingent on the problem behavior
