Ch 15 - Differential Reinforcement Flashcards
What is the purpose of differential reinforcement?
reduce the occurrence of interfering behaviors and reinforce behaviors that are:
more functional than the interfering behavior
incompatible with the interfering behavior
Steps for using Differential Reinforcement (DR)
Step 1. Identifying the Interfering Behavior
Step 2. Determining the Function of the Interfering Behavior
Functional behavior assessment (ABC’s and SEAT)
Tangible, sensory, escape/avoid, attention
Step 3. Identify Data Collection Measures and Collect Baseline Data
Step 4. Selecting a Differential Reinforcement Procedure
Step 5. Creating a (Behavioral) Intervention Plan (B.I.P.)
First step for using DR as treatment?
Identifying the Interfering Behavior
Second step for using DR as treatment?
Determining the Function of the Interfering Behavior
Functional behavior assessment (ABC’s and SEAT)
Tangible, sensory, escape/avoid, attention
Third step for using DR as treatment?
Identify Data Collection Measures and Collect Baseline Data
Fourth step for using DR as treatment?
Selecting a Differential Reinforcement Procedure
Fifth step for using DR as treatment?
Creating a (Behavioral) Intervention Plan (B.I.P.)
What are the 4 types of DR procedures?
DR of alternative behaviors (DRA)
DR of low rates of behavior (DRL)
DR of other behaviors (DRO)
DR of incompatible behaviors (DRI)
Goal of DR of alternative behaviors (DRA)?
Extinction of undesirable behavior
Reinforcement of other, topographically dissimilar behavior
When to use DRA?
- You want to increase a desirable behavior and/or decrease undesirable behaviors.
- The desirable behavior already occurs at least occasionally or you can prompt it.
- You have a reinforcer you can use.
Goal of DR of other behaviors (DRO)
Extinction for the occurrence of the problem behavior
How to use DRO
Reinforcer presented only if problem behavior does not occur within an interval
If problem behavior occurs, timing of interval starts again
What is done in differential reinforcement of low rates (DRL)?
Only low rates of responding are reinforced, with the outcome being that the behavior will occur at a low rate
How does DR of Incompatible Responding (DRI) differ from DRO?
Specifies an incompatible response
How does DR of Incompatible Responding (DRI) differ from DRA?
DRI reinforces an alternate behavior that is incompatible. Not other types of alternate behaviors.
