Negative effects of medicine on body:
- Side effects: Reactions to medicine other than the one intended.
- Tolerance: Body becomes used to medicine (doesn’t work)
- Addiction: Physical and psychological body’s dependence.
- Withdrawal: Physical and psychological symptoms of stopping medication/drug.
Approves all medicines/drugs (safety)
FDA - Food and Drug Administration.
2 types of FDA:
- Prescription medicine: Approval of doctor.
- Over-the-counter medicines: No prescription needed.
Medications prescribed by doctors to treat persistent or serve pain.
Opioids.
Most common forms of opioids:
Morphine, Codeine and Fentanyl.
Brand names:
Vicodin, Percocet and OxyContin.
Medicine Misuse (don’t)
- Don’t take someone else’s prescription.
- Don’t take too much or too little.
- Don’t stop before all pills gone.
- Don’t mix medicines.
Unnecessary or improper use of chemical substances for nonmedical purposes.
Substance/drug abuse.
Chemical substances that people may manufacture, posses, buy or sell. (Street drugs)
Illegal drugs.
Synthetic substances that are similar to the male sex hormone testosterone.
Anabolic-Androgenic steroids.
Anabolic:
Muscle building.
Androgenic:
Increased male characteristics.
Used to increase muscle and athletic performance.
Anabolic and androgenic steroids.
Factors that influence teen illegal drug use:
- Peer pressure.
- Family.
- Role Models.
- Media.
Health consequences of drugs:
- Physical: Hepatitis, HIV, Overdose - Strong, sometimes fatal reaction.
- Mental: Alters brain (loss control, reasoning, lead to mental illness!).
- Social: Affects relationships, lead to crime, suicide, etc.
Addiction Cycle:
- Tolerance: Body needs more.
- Psychological dependence: Person believes he needs the drug to feel good.
- Physiological dependence: Person has a chemical need for the drug.
- Addiction.
6 major categories of drugs:
- Marijuana (cannabis)
- Inhalants: Substances whose fumes are sniffed and inhaled to alter the mind.
- Stimulants: Drugs that speed up the CNS.
- Depressants: Drugs that tend to slow down the CNS.
- Narcotics: Drugs that are obtainable only by prescription and are used to relieve pain.
- Hallucinogens: Drugs that alter moods, thoughts, and sense perceptions, including vision, hearing, smell and touch.
