Q

What is the main difference between fires in wing style nursing homes and new low-rise and high-rise nursing homes?

A

Fire along a given wing must be stopped before it reaches the hub of the building, but smoke can easily permeate and contaminate the entire structure. New low and high-rise nursing homes are very effective in retarding the passage of smoke and fire.

Q

Why can a small fire in a trash chute be a problem?

A

The chute is shared by all floors and even if the fire is confined to the dumpster in the basement, smoke may spread throughout the building until responding crews can douse the flames.

Q

What can be said about high-rise nursing home fires?

A

Although feared by many fires, high-rises provide a good, safe platform from which to wage the battle, but they can produce large quantities of fire and get very hot as a result of compatmentalization. The behavioral component of the residents (mental, nonambulatory, respiratory problems, etc.) is one that you will never quite be able to predict, and will play a huge role in the final outcome.

Q

As an average what is the rule of thumb on manpower neede for rescue at a nursing home fire?

Q

What works well for ventilating high- and low-rise nursing homes?

A

Traditional ventilation using fire towers or stairways works well.
As the air and smoke rises in the tower and past the fire floor, it will draw smoke from down the hall by means of the Venturi effect.

17
Q

How should converted nursing home be vented?

A

According to the type of structure on which they are based.

18
Q

What about backup crews at fires in nursing homes?

A

There may be one or two cases in which backup teams might be assigned to protect the interior crews. If flareups are a possibility as they move down the hall, this may be the one time that 1 3/4” line for backup would be advocated.

19
Q

What is the fundamental reason for using a defend in place strategy?

A

Lack of manpower.

20
Q

Following the removal of victims to asafe haven, what is the first and foremost secondary assignment?

A

Triage of all residents.

21
Q

What is needed to triage, treat and transport the injured?

A

Many EMS personnel.

22
Q

What are the main points of focus once all the victims have been triaged?

A

Treating the victims, overhauling the foreground and securing the residence.
