Ch. 1.6 | Dividing Rational Numbers Flashcards
Complex Fraction
A fraction whose numerator and denominator contains a fraction.
Dividend
The number being divided into equal parts.
Division
Defined as multiplication by the reciprocal of the divisor. For any real numbers (a) and (b), b ≠ 0, (a) ÷ (b) = a/b = a ∙ 1/b
Divisor
Divides the divided into equal parts.
A number by which another number is to be divided.
Multiplicative inverse
(or reciprocal) are two numbers whose product is 1.
Multiplicative Inverse Property
States that the product of a number and its reciprocal is always one (the multiplicative identity).
a ∙ 1/a = 1 and 1/a ∙ a = 1
Quotient
The answer to a division problem.
Reciprocal
(or multiplicative inverses) are two numbers whose product is 1.
The reciprocal of 2/3 is 3/2 because 2/3 ∙ 3/2 = 1.
-5 and -1/5 are reciprocals since -5 ∙ (-1/5) = 1.
