Ch. 1.5 | Multiplying Rational Numbers Flashcards
Associative Property of Multiplication
a(bc) = (ab)c
If you group numbers differently when multiplying, the product is the same.
2( 5 ∙3 ) = ( 2 ∙ 5 )3
Commutative Property of Multiplication
ab = ba
If you multiply two numbers in different orders, the product is the same.
3 ∙ 5 = 5 ∙ 3
Distributive Property
a(b + c) = ab + ac
The product of a number and a sum is equal to the sum of the products of the number and each addend.
3( 6 + 7 ) = ( 3 ∙ 6 ) + ( 3 ∙ 7 )
Factor
Any number that is being multiplied in a problem
Multiplicative Identity Property
a ∙ 1 = 1 ∙ a = a
The product of any number and one is that number.
5 ∙ 1 = 1 ∙ 5 = 5
Product
The answer to a multiplication problem.
Unit Multiplier
A fraction with two different expressions for the same quantity in the numerator and the denominator.
Zero Property of Multiplication
a ∙ 0 = 0
The product of any number and zero is zero.
4 ∙ 0 = 0
