Ch. 16 Flashcards
The provisional restoration allows for testing both the ____ and ____ design of the restoration. The provisional restoration should be thought of as the blueprint of the final restoration and therefore a lot of care and effort should be taken when fabricating the provisional restoration. There are many techniques available for fabricating a provisional restoration. This can be done using a ____ method or an ____ method.

indirect
In the clinic, when you will be preparing abutment teeth it, is advisable to arrive with a ____ shell of acrylic resin made ____ to the patient’s arrival. Having a thin shell of acrylic resin prepared prior to the patient visit will greatly assist you in the fabrication of a provisional restoration and save a lot of chair-time.
thin
prior
To carry out this procedure, prior to the patient visit, a duplicate of the ____ is made. The teeth are then “slightly prepared” on the cast with ____ reduction. An Omnivac or putty shell is then placed on the diagnostic cast of the prepared teeth to form a thin, acrylic resin shell. After the teeth have been prepared intraorally, the shell is relined with self-curing resin.

Another way to fabricate the provisional restoration is to perform the technique ____ chairside after the teeth are prepared. In this situation, you do not fabricate the shell prior to the patient visit, but rather, the provisional is fabricated on a stone cast made from the prepared teeth. After the provisional is fabricated on the stone cast, it is then tried in the patient’s mouth and adjustments are made as needed.
indirectly
The difference between the two techniques is that in the first technique, the teeth are prepared on the cast PRIOR to the patient visit and then the provisional is relined intraorally. The fact that most of this is done prior to the patient’s arrival can substantially ____ chair time. In the second method, the provisional is fabricated on a stone cast of the actual tooth preparations and all procedures are completed after tooth preparation. In the first method, a ____ is always indicated. In the second method, a reline may or may not be ____. Please note that clinically, the thin provisional shell could be fabricated by the ____ (as will be done in the preclinical laboratory) or in the ____ (“lab processed provisional”) by a laboratory technician.

- Try the putty shell on #9 and #11 to check for fit and stability. It is critical that the putty shell completely ____! If not, continue to adjust it until it is seated. Make sure there are no interferences (especially on the palate (rugae) area). The putty shell should only be extending a few ____ past the gingival margins. Excess putty can result in the putty matrix not completely seating, so be certain to trim it sufficiently.
- Once the putty shell is stable and fits well, coat the dentoform with a light coat of Vaseline. Make sure to coat the ____ areas of the abutment teeth, the ____ area #10 as well as the abutments and adjacent teeth #8 and #12.
gingiva
edentulous
- Pour a sufficient amount of the monomer into your rubber dappen dish. Then, add the____ to the ____. Stir and mix taking out all the air bubbles by pressing it against the side of the Dappen dish. Let it sit and wait for it to lose its shine. Once it becomes ____, load a monoject syringe and inject the material around the margins on #9 and #11 and into the putty shell filling #9, #10, #11. If you see air bubbles, work them out with the small end of the cement spatula by pushing them out. Be careful not to flow excess acrylic resin into the adjacent teeth (#8 and #12) because the shell will not seat.

Seat the putty shell that is filled with acrylic resin on the dentoform. Hold the putty on the teeth being careful not to ____ on teeth #9 and #11, which can cause over- seating of the putty shell. Over-seating of the putty shell will result in ____ of the provisional.

laboratories. Lightly vaseline the prepared teeth, gingiva, adjacent teeth, and opposing teeth. Do not apply too much vaseline. The vaseline will act as a ____ and will result in a ____ finish of the provisional.
spacer
porous
- Use the monomer to wet the ____ surface of the acrylic shell before adding the jet acrylic powder.
- Place the mixed resin into the shell.
internal
- Shape the pontic and embrasures with Horico or diamond disks. The pontic will be the ovate pontic design, which is a different design than #3-#5. The ovate pontic is the most ____ pontic design. Its convex surface tissue resides in a soft tissue depression in the residual ridge. This makes it appear as if it is emerging from the gingiva. The entire pontic surface will be ____ and will contact the residual ridge in the ____ of the ridge.23 (Figure 16-1)
- Use ____ teeth as a guide to help determine proper ____ form.
!!!!!! - Maintain proper thickness of the embrasure spaces (____ mm) to ensure that the provisional will not fracture. (Figure 16-2)

If you do not see your finish line in the internal adaptation of the ! provi!sional restoration and the provisional is well adapted to the teeth, go back and !____ your finish line and then, ____ the provisional restoration.
If your margins continue to break off, check that there is adequate ! reduction at the finish line. If not, go back and ____ the preparation and ____.

! In this technique, the provisional restoration is fabricated on a snap stone cast of the prepared teeth following tooth preparation. The provisional restoration may or may not need to be ____. This will be described in further detail.
relined
Seat the putty shell that is filled with acrylic resin on the snap stone model. Hold this together being careful not to press on teeth #9 and #11, which can cause over- seating of the putty shell. Over-seating of the putty shell will result in distortion of the provisiona restoration. Wait for about ____ minutes for this to set. OPTIONAL: you could hold this together with rubber bands placed on #8 and #12 and then place this into WARM water (not hot water) for 10 minutes. Ideally, the use of a ____ in this situation may minimize porosity in the provisional restoration.
10
pressure pot
Try-in the provisional restoration on the Dentoform. Adjust the internal surface, as necessary, to make it seat. Reline only IF ____. A reline may not be needed, as the entire mass of acrylic resin polymerized at once on the stone model versus the direct technique where the provisional is teased on and off of the dentoform and excessive shrinkage occurs. Check that the margins terminate exactly at the finish line of the preparations. Use the thin sable brush to add acrylic resin to any deficient areas, if needed.
