Bureaucracy
A way to organize people to get things done. Set of rules and steps to follow, everybody has a specific job
Government by Proxy
When government hires other groups, like private companies or non-profits to do its work
Laissez-faire
Where government stays out of business and the economy, letting people and companies make their own decisions without interference. “I’m gonna give this problem to u and let u handle it, bye!”
Discretionary authority
When government officials decide how to handle things on their own if rules don’t mention exactly what to do
Competitive service
Federal jobs where people are hired based on test/qualifications, “who meets these qualifications”
Name-request job
A federal job given to a specific person chosen by an agency
Iron triangle
The strong relationship between Congress, government agencies, and interest groups, working together to shape policy
Issue Network
A group of people/experts/interest groups/ officials who work together on a specific policy issue
Appropriation
Congress giving money to a government program/agency
Authorization legislation
A law that allows a government program/agency to exist and set up rules
Trust Funds
Government money set aside for specific programs, like social security
Committee Clearance
When a congressional committee approved actions by a government agency
Legislative Veto
When Congress blocks an action by the executive branch(is now unconstitutional)
Red Tape
Complicated rules/procedures that make government slower
