Ch 15 Flashcards

Q
endosymbionts
A
- mutualistic organisms that live within the body or cells of another organism
- usually have reduced genomes (because do not need to “double-up” on gene functions?)
- usually cospeciate with each other (especially vertical gene transfer as opposed to horizontal gene transfer)
- sometimes even have 2 bacteria in gut that co-evolve with each other and with host (eg. sharpshooters with Sulcia and Baumannia bacteria)
- mitochondria and plastids are endosymbiotic bacteria which co-evolved with hosts to become organelles
- mito–>DNA mutated such that mito genes were deleted and other mutations caused mito genes to transfer into nucleus DNA
