amicus curiae brief
An individual/organization not party to a legal case, but who is permitted to assist a court by offering information/ insight that has a bearing case issues. Latin for “friend of the court”.
Interest groups
Voluntary associations of people who come together with the goal of getting policies they favor enacted. Seek to change policy.
Social movements
Loosely organized groups that educate the public and put pressure on policymakers in an effort to bring about societal change. Seek to change attitude.
Citizen reporting
The action by ordinary citizens of collecting, reporting, and analyzing news
Horse-race journalism
Coverage of political campaigns that focuses more on the drama of the campaign than on policy issues
Narrowcasting
The transmission of programs to a localized/specialized audience
sound bite
A small piece of a recording/interview, meant to exemplify the larger piece
White House press corps
Group of journalists, correspondents, and members of the media assigned to the White House in Washington, D.C., to cover the president, White House events, and news briefings
Yellow journalism
A form of journalism focused on little levels of legitimacy while using eye-catching titles for sensationalist purposes.
Congressional hearing
Meeting or session of Congress, usually open to the public, to obtain information and opinions on proposed legislation, etc.
