Aborigines
An indigenous inhabitant of Australia
Atoll
A low, sandy island made from coral. Often oriented around a central Lagoon.
Austronesian
Language family that encompasses wide expenses of the Pacific, insular Southeast Asia, and Madagascar.
Haoles
Light skinned Europeans or US citizens in the Hawaiian islands.
Intercropping
The practice of planting multiple crops in the same field.
Kanakas
Malaysian agricultural workers imported to Australia, historically concentrated along Queensland’s “sugar coast.”
Mallees
A tough and scrubby eucalyptus wood land of limited economic value that is common across portions of interior Australia.
Maori
Indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand.
Microstates
Usually independent states that are small in both area and population.
Pretty reliant on the state that colonized them because they’re so small.
Outback
Australia’s large, generally dry, and thinly settled interior.
Desert
Pidgin English (pijin)
A version of English that also incorporates elements of other local languages, often utilized to foster trade in basic communication between different culture groups.
White Australian policy
Before 1973, a set of stringent Australian limitations on non-white immigration to the country. It has been largely replaced by a more flexible policy today.
