Bumiputra
The name given to native Malay (literally, “Sons of the soil“), who are given preference for Jobs and schooling by the Malaysian government.
Domino theory
US geopolitical policy of the 1970s, from the assumption that if Vietnam fell to the communist, the rest of southeast Asia would soon follow.
Entrepôt
A city and port that specializes in transshipment of goods.
Golden triangle
The worlds second largest opium and heroin producing area, located in northern Laos, Thailand, and Burma.
Khmer Rouge
Literally, “red (or communist) Cambodians,“ the left-wing insurgent groups that overthrew the Royal Cambodian government in 1975 and subsequently created one of the most brutal political systems the world has ever seen.
Lingua franca
An agreed-upon common language to facilitate communication on specific topics such as international business, politics, sports, or entertainment.
Pancasila
The official national philosophy of Indonesia, which emphasize belief in one God, a just and civilized humanity, the unity of Indonesia, democracy, and social justice.
Swidden
slash and burn agriculture or shifting cultivation. A form of cultivation in which forests or brushy plots are cleared, burned, and then planted to crops, only to be abandoned in a few years later after the soils fertility declines.
Transmigration
The planned, government sponsored relocation of people from one area to another within a state territory.
Tsunami
A very large sea wave induced by earthquakes.
Typhoon
A large tropical storm, similar to a hurricane, that forms in the western Pacific ocean in tropical attitudes and can cause widespread damage to the Philippines and coastal Southeast and East Asia.
