CH 14 Flashcards
stereognosis
ability to discern an object by touch rather than site
2 Divisions of Anterolateral Pathway
- Neospinothalamic
2. Palespinothalamic
Neospinothalamic
Rapid transmission of sensory info to thalamus
Somesthetic Acuity highest vs. lowest (region of body)
High: Lips & Cheek (2-pt discrimination at closer mm apart)
Low: Arm & back
Tactile- Free Nerve Endings
touch & pressure
Tactile- Meissner corpuscles
sensitive to light touch in most sensitive areas (e.g., lips, finger tips)
Tactile- Merkel Disks
Slow adapting, steady state signals
Tactile- Pacinian corpuscle
detects pressure changes in tissues
Tactile- Hair Follicle end organ
detect movement on the surface of the body
Thermal Pain Sensation
Extremes in temp signal rapid withdrawal faster than the actual temp is perceived.
Proprioception (2 submodalites)
- Limb position sense (static)
2. Kinesthesia (dynamic/moving)
Neospinothalamic
Rapid sensory, sharp-fast pain
Paleospinothalamic
slow-conducting sensory signals that do not require localization/discrimination
Migraine
Trigeminal-vascular; unilateral (60%); moderate to severe; pulsating
Tension
Myo-facial pathway; bilateral; Mild to moderate; pressing
Cluster Headache
Trigeminal-autonomic; unilateral (100%); severe; boring/piercing
