Ch 13: Nutrition For Disorders Of The Gastrointestinal Tract Flashcards
What is gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD)?
A syndrome of chronic or recurrent RETURN OF GASTRIC CONTENTS INTO THE ESOPHAGUS that results in a severe burning sensation under the sternum and possibly nausea, belching, cough, or horseness.
What is gastroesophageal reflux (GER)?
RETURN OF GASTRIC CONTENTS INTO THE ESOPHAGUS that results in a severe burning sensation under the sternum; commonly called as HEARTBURN
What is vomiting?
Reverse peristalsis
What is dumping syndrome?
contents from the stomach EMPTY TOO RAPIDLY into the duodenum, causing symptoms such as profuse sweating, nausea, dizziness, and weakness.
What is diarrhea?
Frequent passing of LOOSE, WATERY BOWEL MOVEMENTS
What is constipation?
Straining to pass HARD, DRY STOOLS; slow movement of feces through colon.
What are bezoars?
PHYSICAL OBSTACLES created by tangles of fibrous material IN THE GASTROINTESTINAL (GI) TRACT that may cause dangerous obstructions of the tract.
What is steatorrhea?
Presence of EXCESS FAT in the feces. FAT MALABSORPTION
What is ulcerative colitis (UC)?
An INFLAMMATORY bowel diseases confined to the mucosa of any or all OF THE LARGE INTESTINE
What is Crohn’s disease?
An INFLAMMATORY disorder that involves ALL LAYERS of the walls of the SMALL or LARGE INTESTINE or both;
associated with stricture formation, fistulous tracts, and abscesses.
What is ileostomy?
In a patient with ENTIRE COLON and RECTUM REMOVED, surgical formation of an OPENING of the ILEUM ONTO THE SURFACE OF THE ABDOMEN, through which fecal matter is emptied
Why is colostomy?
Surfing creation of an ARTIFICIAL ANUS ON THE ABDOMEN WALL by INCISING THE COLON and bringing it out on the surface;
may be single-barreled (one opening) or double-barreled (distal and proximal loops open onto the abdomen)
What are MCT fats (oils)?
Specialized modular formulas made of medium-chain TRIGLYCERIDES that do not require pancreatic lipase or bile for digestion and absorption; they are ABSORBED DIRECTLY INTO THE PORTAL VEIN (like amino acids and monosaccharides) rather than through the lymphatic system like other lipids.
What is a diverticula?
POUCH-LIKE HERNIATION protruding from the muscular layer OF THE COLON
What is diverticulitis?
INFLAMMATION OF one or more DIVERTICULA
