Ch. 1.2 | Set Operations Flashcards
1
Q
Complement
A
(an operation on a single set is called a unary operation)
The complement of set M, denoted M’, is the set of all elements in the universal set that are not in the set M.
If the universal set is the set of whole numbers, {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, …}, and M = {1, 3, 5, 7, …}, then M’ = {2, 4, 6, 8, …}.
2
Q
Disjoint Sets
A
When two sets have nothing in common (their intersection is empty).
3
Q
Intersection
A
The intersection of sets A and B, written A ∩ B, is the set that contains the elements belonging to both A and B.
4
Q
Union
A
The union of sets A and B, written A ∪ B, is the set combining all the elements of the given sets.
