terp agencies
usually have “ready to work program” and hire recent grads, usually general work not offered to new grads. agencies like terps with experience. may have secretary and bookkeeping positions avail while terp skills increase
self employed
no paid vacation/sick leave. deduct most of business expenses from total income = lower state or federal taxes paid. car for business, sometimes rent, parking tolls, auto insurance, meals, reduce tax. work is more scarce in summer (school terps are off) and must buy individual medical insurance. taxes must be paid quarterly
recent grads do what to find essential bills paid
sometimes have to find work outside of interpreting
network as a student
in the area you wish to live. new terps receptive of new grads/students
educational interpreting
easier to find full time work, pay 15-45k, range of elementary to college
goals for k-12 students
maintaining grades and progress, becoming independent, empowered and integrated, developing healthy sense of self. (hopefully culture, ASL, history heritage)
mainstreamed aides may to what in addition to being with dDeaf student
assisting teacher with all students, tutoring dDeaf student, interpreting for dDeaf student, teaching ASL
view of you in elementary school
the child will see you as an adult, can help with tasks like tying shoes, lifting to go to water fountain etc
who is the language role model in the elementary environment
you are (if you are the only one working with the child) are you ready for that? is that moral of you to do?
at secondary school what should interpreters strive to do
model boundaries and respect between interpreter and Deaf
