terp agencies
usually have “ready to work program” and hire recent grads, usually general work not offered to new grads. agencies like terps with experience. may have secretary and bookkeeping positions avail while terp skills increase
self employed
no paid vacation/sick leave. deduct most of business expenses from total income = lower state or federal taxes paid. car for business, sometimes rent, parking tolls, auto insurance, meals, reduce tax. work is more scarce in summer (school terps are off) and must buy individual medical insurance. taxes must be paid quarterly
recent grads do what to find essential bills paid
sometimes have to find work outside of interpreting
network as a student
in the area you wish to live. new terps receptive of new grads/students
educational interpreting
easier to find full time work, pay 15-45k, range of elementary to college
goals for k-12 students
maintaining grades and progress, becoming independent, empowered and integrated, developing healthy sense of self. (hopefully culture, ASL, history heritage)
mainstreamed aides may to what in addition to being with dDeaf student
assisting teacher with all students, tutoring dDeaf student, interpreting for dDeaf student, teaching ASL
view of you in elementary school
the child will see you as an adult, can help with tasks like tying shoes, lifting to go to water fountain etc
who is the language role model in the elementary environment
you are (if you are the only one working with the child) are you ready for that? is that moral of you to do?
at secondary school what should interpreters strive to do
model boundaries and respect between interpreter and Deaf
extra materials as post-secondary interpreter
request syllabus and textbooks on loan, not as something that only accessed on site, safety equipment paid for you
goals after graduation
continue to improve, don’t plateau
vrs vs vri
video relay service and video remote interpreting. can interpret between Deaf and hearing only if they are in different locations. funded by FCC (federal communications commissions)
freelance work
not at all gonna happen before a few years out of grad. many prefer to work with an agency
typically charge 2-hour minimums, cost of travel, parking, prep time, admin work, request teams with over an hour, can negotiate halfday to day rates if its 3~hours
calculating rates
auto registration, office expenses, taxes, billing, business clothing, insurance,
business skills
resume, business letters, basic bookkeeping, schedule maintenance, developing business policies
RSI
repetitive strain injury. prevent : warm up before and during breaks, regular exercise and good nutrition, signing habits, appropriate working conditions
emotional burnout
stress management, support systems in place
