Ch. 11 - Complex Experimental Designs Flashcards
complex vs. basic designs
basic: 1 DV, 1 IV
complex: many IV’s, DV’s, factorial design (multiple IV), multivariate (multiple DV)
2x2 between subjects factorial design
two IVs in the same study
2 x 2 box: 4 groups
confirmatory and explanatory hypothesis
confirmatory: researcher specifies. what effects they expect to find
exploratory: does not specify what will be found, more out of curiosity
main effects vs interaction effects
main: compare diffs between levels of one IV across another
interaction: combined effect of both, an effect of IV on DV depends on the other IV
post-hoc tests
compares means of levels of IVs
higher order designs
3+ independent variables
2x2x2, for example
repeated measures complex designs
participants exposed to ALL levels of IV
increases statistical power
mixed designs
includes between-subjects (OR) and repeated-measures (AND)
