biodiversity
the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem.
gene
a unit of heredity which is transferred from a parent to offspring and is held to determine some characteristic of the offspring.
keystone species
a species on which other species in an ecosystem largely depend, such that if it were removed the ecosystem would change drastically.
ecotourism
tourism directed toward exotic, often threatened, natural environments, intended to support conservation efforts and observe wildlife.
endangered species
a species of animal or plant that is seriously at risk of extinction.
threatened species
a plant or animal species generally perceived as likely, in the near future, to become endangered within all or much of its range
exotic species
A species that is living in an area beyond its historical natural range.
poaching
to encroach upon especially for the purpose of taking something.
endemic species
Any species whose range is restricted to a limited geographical area.
germ plasm
germ cells collectively.
endangered species act
The Endangered Species Act of 1973 is the primary law in the United States for protecting imperiled species.
habitat conservation plan
A Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) is prepared by a landowner, in agreement with federal agencies under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
biodiversity treaty
this includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems.
