What are the dimensions of intimacy?
Physical- warmth, touch
Intellectual - sharing ideas
Emotional - sharing feelings
Shared Activities- doing things together
How how does gender influence intimacy? (Women,men)
Women:
Disclose more at any age
More willing to disclose thoughts & feelings
Grow close through personal talk (intellectual & emotional dimension)
Men:
Less likely to share positive feelings
Grow close another not by talking, but by doing things together (physical & shared activities)
How does culture influence intimacy? (Individualistic, collectivistic)
Individualistic cultures
More likely to self-disclose
Make less distinction between personal relationship and casual relationships
Act more familiar with strangers- good at cocktail conversations
Collectivistic Cultures
Big distinction between in-group (family and very close friends) and out-group (everyone else)
Do not share personal info with out-group because it’s inappropriate
