Ch. 1: Science of Zoology Flashcards
What are the main scientific objects to survival of the fittest
1) Did not explain how changes are passed down
2) Did not explain where the changes came from
Microevolution
Variation within species
Macroevolution
Variation among species
4 main concepts of species (TBEP)
- Typological
- Biological
- Evolutionary
- Phylogenetic
Typological concept of species
Based on morphological similarities
- Assumes that species do not change
Biological concept of species
Based on similarity, niche, and the ability to interbreed and produce viable offspring
- Limits asexual species
Evolutionary concept of species
Based on biological concept plus evidence of ancestry
- Limits species with little ancestral information
Phylogenetic concept of species
Based on the evolutionary concept and in any recognizable genetic variation resulting from isolation
How does speciation proceed?
- Mutations
- Spatial/temporal isolation
- Niche specialization and reproductive barriers
Adaptive radiation
Formation of various species from a common ancestral form
