facial expression - scalp muscles
frontal belly: draws scalp anteriorly, raises eyebrows and wrinkles skin or forehead
occipital: draw scalp posteriorly
orbicularis oris
facial expression - mouth muscle
closes and protrudes lips (kissing), compresses lips against teeth, shapes lips during speech
orbicularis oculi
facial expression - orbit muscle
- closes eye
platysma
facial expression - neck muscle
- draws outer part of lips inferiorly and posteriorly (pouting)
masseter
mandible
- elevates mandible, closes mouth
temporalis
mandible
- elevates and retracts mandible
sternocleidomastoid
head
- divides neck into two principal triangles, anterior and posterior
- bilaterally: flex cervical (neck) portion of vertebral column, extend head
- unilaterally: flex neck and head to same side rotate head to side opposite of contracting muscle
external abdominal oblique
abdominal muscle
bilaterally: compress abdomen and flex vertebral column
unilaterally: laterally flex vertebral column
internal abdominal oblique
abdominal muscle
bilaterally: compress abdomen and flex vertebral column
unilaterally: laterally flex vertebral column
rectus abdominus
abdominal muscle
flexes vertebral column, compresses abdomen to aid in defecation, urination, forced exhalation and childbirth
transverse abdominus
abdominal muscle
