What is mental health?
mental health is a state of emotional, psychological, and social wellness evidenced by satisfying interpersonal relationships, effective behavior and coping, positive self concept, and emotional stability
What factors influence mental health?
1) individual
2) interpersonal
3) social/cultural
What are individual factors?
includes persons biologic makeup, autonomy and independence, self-esteem, capacity of growth, vitality, ability to find meaning in life, emotional resilience, sense of belonging, reality orientation, coping or stress management abilities
What are interpersonal/relationship factors?
effective communication, ability to healp others, intimacy, balance os separateness and connectedness
What are social/cultural factors?
sense of community, access to adequate resources, intolerance of violence, support of diversity among ppl, positive yet realistic view of ones world
What is mental illness?
-disorders that affect mood, behavior, and thinking
-often cause sig. distress or impaired functioning
How can you use the DSM-5?
its a helpful resource to understand the reason for the admission
What is an asylum?
safe refuge/haven offering protection at institutions where ppl had been whipped, beaten, starved bc they were mentally ill
When were psycotropic drugs developed?
1950s
What is deinstitutionalization?
deliberate shift from institutional care in state hospitals to community facilities
What is boarding?
kept in ED while waiting to see if the crisis descalates or until an inpatient bed can be located or becomes available
What is the “revolving door” phenomenon?
a subpopulation of chronically mentally ill patients frequently readmitted to psychiatric units
What is managed care?
concept designed to purposely control the balance btwn quality of care provided and cost of care
What is case management?
effort to provide necessary services while containing cost
What are standards of care?
authoritative statements by professional organizations that describe the responsibilities for which nurses are accountable for
