Ch 1 - Evolutionary biology Flashcards
Heraclitus
500BC - only constant is change
Al-jahiz
800s - talked about struggle for existence, but believed God created all
Alfred Russell Wallace
Independently came up with natural selection, but less evidence etc.
Thomas Malthus
Talked about surplus population which is usually prevented by disease or resources, more offspring then resources
Jean Baptiste LaMarck
Acquired features passed on - environment shapes adaptations; first to provide explanation of evolution
Georges Cuvier
Believed organisms did not evolve, studied fossils and said they didn’t change; proved that extinction occurred
Steno/Hutton/Lyell
Geologists; stratification and superposition (ancient earth); uniformitarianism
Darwin’s travels
Fossils and living animals; Birds in different locations had different adaptations which were suited for their environment
Adaptation
a change by which an organism or species becomes better suited to its environment
Descent with modification
Species descend uninterrupted from common ancestor
Essentialism
Variation in a species is imperfection from an ideal form (Plato)
Evolution (basic definition)
the change in characteristics of groups of organisms over time
Evolutionary or modern synthesis
Merges Darwin and genetics. Evolution caused by Mutations, natural selection, genetic drift, and gene flow
Inheritance of acquired characteristics
Lamarck: adaptations acquired during an animal’s lifetime could be passed down (eg. giraffes stretching their necks)
Macroevolution
New species and major evolutionary changes due to the effects of microevolution
