Governance
Is the process by which an organization exercises authority and performs the functions assigned to it
Regulations
are developed by various government or government-authorized organizations to implement law that has been passed by a government body
Standards
are issued by non governmental entities and are generally based on a consensus
Authority having jurisdiction
is the governing body that sets operational policy and procedures for the jurisdiction in which fire department operates.
Policies
are developed to provide a definitive guidelines for present and future actions.
Standard Operating Procedures
provide specific information on the actions that should be taken to accomplish a certain task.
NFPA 1001
Standard for FF Professional Qualifications - sets the parameter of the FFI and FFII
Difference between SOP and SOG
They are similar to SOP but they may vary due to the circumstances of a particular incident. SOP are more strict than a SOG. The flexibility allows the FF to deviated from a set procedure yet still be held accountable for that action

Chain of command

Lieutant
is responsible for a single fire company on a single shift
Captain
are responsible not only for managing a fire company on their shift but also coordinating the company’s activity with other shifts
Battalion Chief
also known as district chiefs are responsible for coordinating the activities of several fire companies in a defined geographic area such as a station or district
Asst. or Division Chief
are usually in charge of function area such as training within the department
Chief of the department
has overall responsibility for the administration and operation of the fire department.
Discipline
involves guiding and directing members to do what their fire department expects of them
Division of labor
is a way of organizing an incident by breaking down the overall strategy into a series of smaller tasks.
Unity of Command
is the concept that each member answer to only one supervisor, each supervisor only answers to one and boss and so on
Span of Control
is the number of people whose on person can supervise effectively. According to FEMA the span on control for emergency personnel is ideal between 3 - 7.
