Ch. 1 Evolution of the Fire Apparatus and History of Fire Science Flashcards
Governance
Is the process by which an organization exercises authority and performs the functions assigned to it
Regulations
are developed by various government or government-authorized organizations to implement law that has been passed by a government body
Standards
are issued by non governmental entities and are generally based on a consensus
Authority having jurisdiction
is the governing body that sets operational policy and procedures for the jurisdiction in which fire department operates.
Policies
are developed to provide a definitive guidelines for present and future actions.
Standard Operating Procedures
provide specific information on the actions that should be taken to accomplish a certain task.
NFPA 1001
Standard for FF Professional Qualifications - sets the parameter of the FFI and FFII
Difference between SOP and SOG
They are similar to SOP but they may vary due to the circumstances of a particular incident. SOP are more strict than a SOG. The flexibility allows the FF to deviated from a set procedure yet still be held accountable for that action
Roles of a Engine company
secures a water source and extinguishes the fire
deploying landlines
conducting search and rescue
Roles of a Truck company
provides aerial support at a fire
forcible entry
Ventilation
Roof operation
search and rescue and deployment of ground ladders
Roles of Rescue company
responsible for rescuing victims from fires, confined spaces, trenches, and high angle situations
Roles of Wildland and brush companies
dispatched to vegetation fires
Hazmat company
responds to and controls scenes involving spilled or leaking hazardous materials
EMS company roles
respond to and assist in medical and trauma victims to medical facilities for further treatment.
Chain of command
creates structure for managing the department and the fire ground operations
Lieutant
is responsible for a single fire company on a single shift
Captain
are responsible not only for managing a fire company on their shift but also coordinating the company’s activity with other shifts
Battalion Chief
also known as district chiefs are responsible for coordinating the activities of several fire companies in a defined geographic area such as a station or district
Asst. or Division Chief
are usually in charge of function area such as training within the department
Chief of the department
has overall responsibility for the administration and operation of the fire department.
Discipline
involves guiding and directing members to do what their fire department expects of them
Division of labor
is a way of organizing an incident by breaking down the overall strategy into a series of smaller tasks.
Unity of Command
is the concept that each member answer to only one supervisor, each supervisor only answers to one and boss and so on
Span of Control
is the number of people whose on person can supervise effectively. According to FEMA the span on control for emergency personnel is ideal between 3 - 7.
Aircraft / Crash Rescue FF
Individual who. takes firefighting actions to prevent, control or extinguish fire involved or adjacent to an aircraft for purpose of maintaining maximum escape routes for occupants using normal and emergency routes for egress.
Booster line
a rigid hose that is 3/4 inches or 1 inch. in diameter. Delivers water at a rate of 30-60 gallons per minute
Bucket brigade
an early effort at fire prevention that used leather buckets filled with water to combat fires
Chemical wagon
a small truck constructed with a large soda acid extinguisher and 50 ft or more small hose
NFPA 1002
Standard for Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Professional Qualifications
EVT
Emergency Vehicle Technician - performs maintenance, diagnosis and repair to emergency vehicles.
FLSE
Fire and life Safety Educator - the individual who has demonstrated the ability to coordinate, created and administer, prepare, deliver and evaluate educational programs and information
Fire investigator
an individual who has demonstrated the skill and knowledge necessary to conduct, coordinate and complete and investigation
Fire marshal
a person designated to provide delivery, management and/or administration of fire protection and life safety related codes and standards, investigations, education and/or prevention services for local, county, state etc. NFPA 1037
Fire plugs
a valve installed to control water accessed from wooded pipes.
NFPA
the association that develops and maintains nationally recognized minimum consensus standards on hazardous materials.
Pressure
force per unit
How did the Great Baltimore Fire in 1904 effect fire companies and how they gain their water supply?
It resulted in the development of standardizing coupling threads after mutual aid forces by Philadelphia, NYC and other locales were stymied when their equipment could not hook up to the local Baltimore hydrants.
When did the first gasoline powered fire apparatus emerge?
1900s
Where was the first fire department to become fully motorized?
Savannah, GA
Chemical Wagon
the first gasoline powered fire apparatus to discharge water. This small truck carried a large soda acid extinguisher and 50 ft or more of small hose. It also carried a supply of double jacked cotton hose, a short ladder and a running board on which the firefighters would ride.
