Ch 1: Characteristics of Life Flashcards
metabolism
sum of all chemical reactions in body
movement
change in position of body or of a body part; motion of an internal organ
(ex: heart contracting)
responsiveness
reaction to a change inside or outside the body
(ex: shivering, sweating)
growth
increase in body size without change in shape
respiration
obtaining oxygen, removing carbon dioxide, and releasing energy from food
(ex: breaking things down like glucose)
digestion
breakdown of food into simpler forms that can be absorbed and used
two types of digestion
mechanical (tongue, teeth) and chemical (enzyme, saliva)
absorption
passage of substances through membranes and into body fluids
assimilation
changing of absorbed substances into different chemical forms
(breaking down bigger substances into fundamental components)
circulation
movement of substances in body fluids
excretion
removal of wastes produced by metabolic reactions
(by product of excess from metabolism)
reproduction
production of new organisms and new cells
(sexual = most common because of GENETIC VARIETY)
