Cell Organelles (9/24) Flashcards
Cell membrane
controls what enters and exits the cell through semipermeable wall
–> hydrophilic heads LOVE water, while hydrophobic tails HATE water
(rod like vs. globular: globular pushes to control what comes in/out)
Nucleolus
makes RIBOSOMES
Nucleus
“in charge” because it has DNA = code for all that proteins that make up an organism
Rough Endoplasmic reticulum
refines proteins for export that were produced by ribosomes
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
repairs lipids
(50% of cell membrane = lipids, so we want to make sure they’re not leaking –> do so through lipid repair)
Golgi Apparatus
responsible for the packing and shipping of proteins –> shipped into VESICLES
Mitochondria
converts food we eat into chemical energy (ATP!) cells can use
–> CRISTAE = where enzymes are located to do mass production of ATP
Lysosomes
contain digestive enzymes to break down bacteria or old cell parts
Centrosome/centrioles
centrosome = organelles
–> centriole: responsible for movement of DNA during cell division
Cilia & Flagella
both help in MOVEMENT
–> cilia = smaller structures, but more NUMEROUS
–> flagella = larger structures, but SINGULAR
Most organized to least organized DNA
1). Chromatin: like spaghetti in relaxed shape
2). Chromatid: more condensed for it to move easier
3). Chromosome: more compact to be able to accurately copy DNA
