Ch. 1 Assessment and Evaluation Flashcards
Kinesiology
The study of physical activity and movement
Articular system + importance
Definition: Series of joints that allow movement of the body
Importance: Allows motion and Provides Stability
Open Kinematic Chain
A sequence of action in which the body part farthest from the trunk is free during movement
Ex: waving hand, kicking a ball
Closed Kinematic chain
A sequence of action in which the body park farthest from the trunk is fixed during movement
Ex: squat, walking, push-up
Define the three classifications of joints
- Synarthrosis: Immovable (ex: skull)
- Amphiarthrosis: Slightly movable (ex: ribs to sternum/joints between vertebrae)
- Synovial Joints: Freely moveable
Joint Cavity
Open spcae containing fluid
Ligament
Two joints in connection providing stability
Synovial membrane
prevents the grinding of bone
Name the Synovial Joint:
Bone moves around a central axis
Pivot Joint
Name the Synovial Joint:
Allows bones to make a sliding motion
Gliding Joint
Name the Synovial Joint:
Allows flexion and Extension
Ex: Elbows, Knees, Fingers + Toes
Hinge Joint
Name the Synovial Joint:
Allows bones to move about one another in many directins but not rotate
Ex: Metacarpals + phalanges
(finger bone + finger joint)
Condyloid Joint
Name the Synovial Joint:
Rounded end of bone fits into and indented end of another
Hint: WIDEST range of motion
ex: Hips + Shoulders
Ball and Socket Joint
Name the Synovial Joint:
Between two bones with complementary shapes
Hint: Wide range of motion
Ex: Thumb
Saddle Joint
Name the movement:
Opposite
Ex: when the thumb is touching ring/pinkie finger
Opposition
